Woman who awoke from coma is on 'Good Morning America'
The 65-year-old Lake Elmo woman who cheated death when she woke up from a coma is now making national news with her story.
Raleane (Rae) Kupferschmidt is to appear on the "Good Morning America" TV show today about 8 a.m., said her husband, Alan Kupferschmidt. The show airs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. weekdays on KSTP-TV, Channel 5 (ABC).
Last month, Kupferschmidt was brought to the hospital, where doctors discovered she had suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage. The family prepared for her funeral.
But as families and friends said goodbye to her as she lay in a coma, Kupferschmidt unexpectedly began to wake up. A surgery removed the blood clot and she has steadily improved.
Local television and print media pounced on the "miracle" recovery story this week. A crew from "Good Morning America" filmed Kupferschmidt as she left the hospital Wednesday and followed her home for the story that is scheduled to air today on ABC.
"NBC called and they wanted to fly her out to New York to do a story,'' Alan Kupferschmidt said. "But I said no. We're wearing her out. She's in recovery."
The media frenzy has been somewhat exciting for the family, but Alan Kupferschmidt said they likely won't miss it when it's gone. "We're just so glad that she's back."
The Amber Satterwhite Story - HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen) Therapy
What was at stake was whether they should continue to have hope their 14-year-old daughter could ever wake from what doctors had called a "persistent vegetative state."
Within hours the hospital workers had intubated and prepared Amber for travel to a larger hospital in Columbia, S.C. It was determined there that she had an anoxic brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain as a result of the seizures.
Another doctor scoffed at the notion of rehabilitation and told Melody, "[Amber] is in a vegetative state. There is no hope for her—no help for her in a rehab hospital. There is no way."
Here is a video of her case study using HBOT. Amber was diagnosed PVS.
